Minimize Periodontal Disease in Cats

Let us take a moment to think about what we (people) do to maintain good dental health:

Brush our teeth at least twice a day
Floss our teeth once a day
Go to the dentist for regular check up once a quarter

Only if our cats can do what we do we would not have to worry about their dental health. If we do not take care of our cat's dental health, plaque will start to form and will cause tarter build. This then will lead into gingivitis (inflammation, redness and swelling of the gums) and develop periodontal disease, which will impact the tissue that supports their teeth. Periodontal disease is serious, but if you take your cat to your veterinarian at the early stage the disease can be cured.

How to minimize development of Periodontal Disease

Here are two ways to simple ways to minimize the development of Periodontal Disease:

Dry Cat Food or Snack

Feed your cat dry food or snack. Pick a flavor that your feline enjoys and let the cat chew on it from time to time. When your cat chews on the dry food or snack, the friction will clean they're teeth and gums. This then minimize the build up of tarter in your feline's mouth.

Brush Your Cat's Teeth

Brushing your cat's teeth regularly will minimize the growth of plague and build up of tartar, which then will minimize the development of Periodontal Disease. From personal experience, brushing our feline's teeth is a difficult task. Either they won't sit still or start to scratch you with their paws. I started to take my cat to my local cat groomer to have their teeth brushed. Cat groomers are professionals that know how to deal with cats that are aggressive to the gentle once. Plus, make it a good experience for your cat. Everyone needs to be pampered once in a while.
