How to Take Care of Your Cat's Urinary Health - Cat's Health is As Important As Yours

Loving pet parents will agree that their four-legged friends are an important part of their family. They have constant companionship, loyalty and love brighten the lives of everyone in the household. And, as you might expect, pets share many of the same needs as their human counterparts. Things like good nutrition, exercise, entertainment and other basics are just as important for maintaining the health and well-being of our fluffy friends as they are for humans. Deprive your pet of all of these and your beloved feline will suffer.

The most common urinary tract problem the cats suffer from is urinary tract infections. In general, cat urinary tract infections are infections affecting the cat's urinary system. Usually caused by the Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli, these infections may result in urinary tract complications like stricture, malfunction, inflammation, or obstruction of the urethra.

Once diagnosed with having urinary tract infection, cats are usually given antibiotics to combat the bacteria causing the infection. Antibiotics generally work for such infections, but there is a high rate of recurrence of the infection in cats. And once the infection recurs, using the same antibiotics will no longer work in battling the infection. This is because bacteria has a tendency to develop immunity or resistance to drugs they have been previously exposed to. So to maintain your cat urinary health, it is important that infections are treated early and completely, and are not allowed to recur.

To prevent infections from occurring and/or recurring, here are some simple tips to help you maintain the health of your cat's urinary system:

Water, water and more water. Always keep your cats hydrated. Make sure that they have constant access to water. Keeping the cat's body hydrated means more frequent urinations, and more chances for bacteria filtered in the cat's kidneys to be flushed out. Keeping cat's hydrated also dilutes the urine, preventing the formation of stones, which can be a risk factor in the development of bacterial infections.

Raw, moist food is much better than dry food. Feeding your cats moist food will provide them another venue to take in water. In addition, start them on a low-carbohydrate diet. Carbohydrates break down into sugars, which are in turn excellent growth media for bacteria.

Regularly clean those litter boxes. Keep those litter boxes clean. Dirty litter boxes are one of a small number of likely causes of urinary tract infections. The reason for this is that litter boxes are a breeding ground for bacteria which gains access to the urinary system through the urethra.

Keep their immune system strong. Cats with strong immune systems rarely fall prey to urinary tract infections. Just as with people, their immune system health can be maintained and improved through diet, exercise, and supplementation. Your veterinarian will be happy to help you formulate an effective plan for immune system health.

If you are like one of the millions of cat owners all over the world, you wouldn't want your cat to suffer any pain or discomfort. So knowing all of these tips will help you creat a safe and fun environment for your cat, while still maintaing the health of a cat's urinary system.
