Feline Awareness

If you have cats at home you should know what they're all about, or at least you should know more than the generally accepted truth that they're good for chasing mice. Knowing more about your cat (or cats in general) can help you in taking care of your pet cat or understanding it better. At least, you can avoid any cat-related dangers to your household and your kids.

Cats are mostly nocturnal creatures, sleeping most of the day and going out at night to socialize with other cats. They can easily make a mess out of your kitchen or living room given the right moments of hunger-frenzy or extreme playfulness. Cats play-fight together (or run around playing, if alone) to simulate actual fighting. So play-fights (and bouts of running around) can potentially progress into full blown cat disasters. Cats mark their territories by scratching wood or other materials that can take the place of wood. This also doubles as a claw sharpening exercise. So keep your expensive furniture away. Aside from that, cats are uniquely clean when it comes to their own territory. If they urinate or defecate within their territory, they push earth or dirt on top of it to cover their urine or droppings. A litter box works well for your feline pet's needs.

The only other dangerous periods you should watch out for are before, during, and after your cat gives birth. Mating season may become violent for cats. When female cats become pregnant they become extra moody and extra playful-they can easily unintentionally wound you while you're playing with them. Of course, after giving birth, they tend to be over protective of their kittens. So if you aren't the one who is most used to handling the mother cat, don't try to get near them for a while.
