Pets - Is a Cat Right For You?

Cats tend to be complicated and a little mysterious while showing very little emotion. While they are much less clingy than their canine counterparts, they do need responsible owners who have the right personality to care for them.

A lot of pet owners prefer cats over dogs, but if you are thinking about getting a cat for the first time, consider some things before deciding if a cat is for you.

Think about why you want a cat. They need a lot of commitment and upkeep even they seem pretty content with flying solo. Keeping the litter box clean, grooming the animal, keeping it from scratching furniture and taking it to the vet periodically are all part of the cat owner's life. Make sure you are ready if this pet is for a kid.

Children make great pet companions, but they will need help taking care of it. This means time and involvement from responsible adults in the house.

Cats are not all alike, and they come in lots of different shapes and sizes. Just like dogs, different breeds have different personalities and issues, so make sure you pick the right cat for your home.

If there are allergy sufferers in your home, getting a long haired cat may be a problem for them. Short hair cats don't shed nearly as much and they produce less dander.

If you will be expecting your cat to be by your side all the time, then a cat is not for you. These animals love to roam and explore, and they prefer to do it alone. They will come to you for food and affection and a nice place to sleep, but most cats will come and go as they please and do whatever they want.

Cats make the perfect pets for a lot of people, but make sure that you have the right personality for a feline companion. If you have concerns or reservations, this may not be the right animal for you.
